Hello, I Love You ?

Hello, I Love You ?
Aren’t “The Doors” known for their deep and often cryptic lyrics, with many songs reflecting Jim Morrison’s poetic and philosophical inclinations?

“Hello, I Love You” stands out as very shallow compared to some of their more profound works.

“Hello, I Love You” is more straightforward and a very commercially-oriented song. The lyrics are simple, bordering on naive, simplistic, and repetitive, focusing on a direct expression of desire:

Hello, I love you
Won’t you tell me your name?
Hello, I love you
Let me jump in your game

It’s hard to fathom compared to “The End,” one of their most profound and complex songs, which features evocative and surreal imagery:

This is the end
Beautiful friend
This is the end
My only friend, the end

And “Riders on the Storm,” another example of The Doors’ poetic depth, incorporates existential themes:

Riders on the storm
Into this house we’re born
Into this world we’re thrown
Like a dog without a bone
An actor out on loan

This highlights how artists often need to pull in audiences and sometimes succumb to, or are forced by their agents to, go commercial.

Hint: watch Morrison’s blasé performance.
